Phase 2 Gets Union Cabinet Approval — Airport Connector Among Key Highlights

Published on: Wednesday, 18 December 2024By SMRL Planning Division

The Union Cabinet approves Phase 2 of Surat Metro covering 28.4 km and 23 new stations, including a dedicated Airport Connector linking Surat International Airport to the city centre.

In a significant boost for Surat's urban mobility, the Union Cabinet approved Phase 2 of the Surat Metro project in December 2024. Phase 2 will add 28.4 km of metro network with 23 new stations across three new corridors.

The most anticipated component is a dedicated Airport Connector linking Surat International Airport directly to Surat Railway Station via the city centre — cutting the airport-to-city travel time from around 45 minutes by road to roughly 18 minutes by metro.

Other Phase 2 corridors include the Vesu Extension, Pal Extension, and a spur toward the Diamond Bourse complex near Dream City, serving the fast-growing residential areas of Vesu, Pal, Althan Bhatha, and Adajan Patia.

Detailed Project Reports for Phase 2 corridors, along with a proposed Saroli–Antroli extension linking to the upcoming Bullet Train station, have since been finalised and submitted for construction approval. Upon completion, the Surat Metro network is projected to span a significantly larger footprint with dozens of additional stations.
