All 32 Phase 1 Stations Powered by Solar Energy
SMRL completes solar panel installation across all 32 Phase 1 stations, generating 4.2 MW daily and making Surat Metro one of India's greenest metro systems ahead of commercial launch.
Surat Metro Rail Limited has completed solar panel installation at all 32 Phase 1 metro stations. Over 8,500 solar panels have been installed across station rooftops, generating approximately 4.2 MW of clean energy daily — enough to power station lighting, air conditioning, escalators, lifts, and electronic systems.
The Green Stations project was implemented in partnership with the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA). Excess energy generated during daylight hours is fed back into the state grid under Gujarat's net metering policy.
Once commercial operations begin, the network will run on a combination of solar energy and grid power, with regenerative braking on trains feeding energy back into the system. SMRL's net-zero target for 2030 includes 100% renewable energy for all operations and a fully electric maintenance fleet.
'Going green before we even open is a statement of intent. Surat Metro will be one of India's most sustainable metro systems,' said SMRL's Environment and Sustainability Chief.
