Red Line Signalling System Receives Independent Safety Certification

Published on: Friday, 14 March 2025By SMRL Safety Division

The ATP/CBTC signalling system on the Red Line is certified by Lloyd's Register Rail as meeting international safety standards, clearing a key prerequisite for CMRS inspection.

The Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system on the Red Line (Corridor 1) has been certified by independent safety assessors Lloyd's Register Rail as meeting international safety standards for metro rail operations.

The certification, a prerequisite for the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection, confirms the signalling system can safely manage train movements at design headways during peak operations, automatically preventing trains from exceeding safe speeds and managing platform screen door operations.

The CBTC system, supplied and installed by Siemens Mobility, was tested against dozens of failure scenarios including power outages, signal faults, and emergency braking situations — all handled safely within specified parameters.

With signalling certification complete, SMRL shifted focus to preparing the Dream City–Althan Tenement stretch for the intensive trial-run programme that began in March 2026.

'Our signalling system is one of the most advanced deployed on any metro in Gujarat,' said SMRL's Chief Signal Engineer. 'It's a critical milestone on the road to commercial service.'
