Trial Runs Begin on Dream City–Althan Tenement Priority Stretch

Published on: Monday, 30 March 2026By SMRL Operations Team

SMRL commences intensive trial operations on the 8.5 km elevated Dream City–Althan Tenement section, marking the start of a ~500-hour testing programme ahead of commercial launch.

Surat Metro Rail Limited (SMRL) commenced intensive trial operations on 29 March 2026 on the 8.5 km elevated viaduct section between Dream City and Althan Tenement — the designated priority stretch for Surat Metro's first commercial opening.

The trial programme is scheduled to run for approximately 500 hours, evaluating train speed profiles, braking systems, door synchronisation, signalling reliability, and overall operational stability under real-world conditions. Track laying and third-rail traction power installation on this stretch were completed ahead of the trial start.

SMRL confirmed that Alstom-manufactured train sets will operate multiple round trips daily during the test window, closely monitored by technical teams and observers from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) office.

'This is the most visible sign yet that Surat Metro is close to opening,' said an SMRL engineering official. 'Once we complete the test hours and receive CMRS clearance, we can move to a formal commercial launch date.'

Residents along the corridor have reported regularly spotting test trains running on the viaduct since the trials began, a welcome sight after years of construction.
