PM Modi Highlights Surat Metro During ₹18,800 Crore Development Visit

Published on: Thursday, 18 June 2026By SMRL Communications

During his June 2026 visit to Surat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for projects worth ₹18,800 crore, highlighting the city's growing metro network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Surat in June 2026 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for a slate of development projects worth approximately ₹18,800 crore, spanning transport, industrial infrastructure, power distribution, healthcare, and urban development.

In his address, the Prime Minister specifically highlighted Surat's rapid progress on electric mobility and its expanding metro network, noting that the city — long known as India's diamond and textile hub — was fast becoming a model for urban transit in Gujarat.

While the metro itself was not the centrepiece of the visit, the mention has fuelled renewed public anticipation for the commercial launch, which is currently awaiting Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) clearance following ongoing trial runs.

Local officials say the visit reinforced the state government's commitment to completing Phase 1 and progressing Phase 2 planning, including the proposed Airport Connector and the Saroli–Antroli bullet train link extension.

'The Prime Minister's words are a reminder that Surat's metro isn't just a transit project — it's part of the city's larger transformation,' said a Surat Municipal Corporation official present at the event.
